This is a little write up for painting the
plastic parts of a jeep. My guinea pig was a 98 Grand Cherokee.
The most important tools that are needed are a scotchbrite pad and an
ammonia based cleaner. Windex with ammonia D is my choice. The paint
used was Krylon Fusion Satin black rattle cans. I used 4 cans on this
project but was wishing I had a 5th
Start by scrubbing all the surfaces down with these two products, and
wiping dry.
The beauty of the ZJ body is that all of the plastic is held on with
clips. The door cladding all snaps off by grabbing the bottom and
yanking it off. It just hangs on the top part of the clips.
Just be careful on the back doors. Before you give that tug on the
bottom you will need to open the door and look for this little guy. It
is the one and only piece of actual hardware on the doors, and requires
a 10mm socket to get it off.
The front bumper requires removing the signal and marker light , and
breaking some rivets, but again, for the most part just a bunch of
clips to remove.
The rear bumper has 2 bolts behind the tail lights, and then again a
bunch of clips. The bumper just slide straight out toward you after all
the fasteners have been removed.
Don't let all these part intimidate you. All of this plastic can be
taken off in less than a half hour.
After everything is dried and snapped back in place you will end up
with something like this.
